A pool in Florida takes real abuse - sun, heat, afternoon storms, pollen, salt air near the coast, and constant use. The homeowners whose pools look great 10 years in are the ones who avoid a handful of very common mistakes. Here's what to watch for.
Mistake 1: Ignoring Water Chemistry Until Algae Hits
By the time the water is green, the damage is already done - staining, scale, and equipment wear. Test weekly, especially in rainy season, and keep chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and cyanuric acid inside spec.
Mistake 2: Running the Pump Too Little (or Too Much)
Turnover matters. In South Florida heat, you usually want 8-12 hours of filtration daily in summer. Variable-speed pumps pay for themselves in 1-2 years because they run lower and longer, cutting energy bills without sacrificing water quality.

Mistake 3: Skipping Filter Cleans
Cartridge and DE filters need regular cleaning. A clogged filter starves your pump, pushes dirty water past the media, and shortens the life of both the filter and the pump.
Mistake 4: Using Pucks Indefinitely
Trichlor pucks add cyanuric acid (stabilizer) with every use. Over months, CYA accumulates and makes your chlorine progressively less effective. If your chlorine 'just doesn't hold,' you probably have high CYA - and the only fix is partial water replacement.

Mistake 5: Brushing Only When It Looks Bad
Brushing walls and steps weekly prevents the invisible buildup that turns into stains and scale. It's the single cheapest maintenance task with the highest payoff.
Mistake 6: Neglecting the Salt Cell
Saltwater pools need their cell inspected and cleaned regularly. Scale buildup cripples output, your chlorine drops, and eventually you're replacing a $700+ cell.

Mistake 7: DIY-ing Equipment Repairs
Pool electrical and gas work are legitimately dangerous. Bonding issues can injure swimmers; gas heater repairs can cause fires. Use a licensed pool professional for anything beyond basic chemistry and cleaning.
